 A thank-you note I received from the head of two Bay Area Montessori schools inspired me to be more active in teaching Black history. She had used my books to help make a Black History Exhibit in her schools. 

The note ended with this comment:

“We were able to use the information … in the book—at a time when true Black history is so, so important.” 

To find out some of the best practices for teaching Black History, I interviewed Tamara Shiloh, author and owner of The Multicultural Bookstore in Richmond, CA, and Las Vegas, NV. Tamara also has created a Professional Development course in Teaching Black History All Year. I was interested in hearing about her methods of teaching Black History so I booked her for a podcast. In addition to teaching the course, Tamara is an author of the Just Imagine book series that teach elementary students about Black Inventors and Scientists. You can order those books here.

Nia Academy in Richmond, CA.

Tamara is also the founder of a micro school, Nia Academny in Richmond, CA. which opens Sept 6, 2025 Her school is the recipient of the first Grant of Canvas & Courage. They will be using the books in the Women of Color and Accomplishment series to create art for inclusion in my next art exhibit opening September 2, 2025. More info on that exhibit will be in a future blog post.
