Enterprising Entrepreneurs: 16 Women of Color and Accomplishment tells the powerful, often-overlooked stories of 15 Black women who saw a need, and built something lasting. This book tells the story of how these women used creativity, courage, and business skills to create a business and change their communities.

In Filling a Need section, readers meet women who created businesses when doors were closed to them, publishers, bankers, designers, caregivers, and innovators who built solutions from the ground up. On the Cutting Edge highlights women who stepped boldly into new technologies of their time, from early film to television, shaping the future before the world was ready to recognize them. The final section, Giving Back, entrepreneurship becomes a tool for community care, as wealth and success are reinvested into education, health, housing, and justice.

This book invites readers to rethink who builds businesses, who leads change, and how courage and vision can create opportunity where none existed before.

Some praise for the Women of Color and Accomplishment series:

I am deeply inspired by Carol Jacobsen’s extraordinary art and her visionary approach to teaching Black History through art. Her Women of Color and Accomplishment series provide such a powerful and engaging way for students to learn about the lives and legacies of African American women. The vibrant portraits not only honor these trailblazers but also invite children to connect with history in a personal, meaningful way.
